I think they are either shy or are unsure of how to start the conversation. I can think of one user who has never engaged me in conversation, that I can recall, and that is quite a feat. Yet, he seems perfectly nice and reasonable, otherwise. Not everyone is the chatter boxes that we are. Some people are not good with an all text environment.

Some of those might run on the shy side and choose not to participate much in comment threads, given the more personal and intimate aspect of it vs. the matter-of-fact one of just asking a question. Others, I'm afraid just do it for the points and really have no genuine interest at all in what other people might think.

Hmmmm. Could be these folks just like asking questions for the sake of asking. Maybe they figure their work is finished once they get questions into circulation. Kind of a "I'll feed AB with questions. Let everyone else debate the issues." That's speculation on my part, though. Having written 25,700+ comments over the past three years, I have absolutely no frame of reference for answering this question, LOL .

They must do it for the points. I've noticed some that some very seldom make a comment or even answer a question also. My problem is I don't think of good questions. One answer and there needs to be no more.

I find it hurtful when no comment is left, you take the time to answer their question, the least they can do is say thank you.

Perhaps they are good at generating questions, but not so interested in the intimacy that often pops into comment threads. Perhaps they are looking to level up and feel they get a greater response to questions than answers. Or, maybe they simply feel it is a slow night/week/month on AB and they are trying to spruce it up for those that are not prolific question writers. For these circumstances, this mode of bagging offers some entertainment to pass the time and the ability to level up, while maintaining a level of personal detachment.

Perhaps they are emotionally unavailable.

Who knows? Maybe the reward is just reading what other people think about a subject. Maybe for some it's to get attention...to affirm their belief that they are smart, witty, stupid, whatever. Personally, I enjoy reading other peoples thoughts on issues. I participate as well, but there is a certain aspect of just reading answers that I find fascinating. I dunno, maybe we should ask them? ;)
