They arent all yellow. There are several taxi companies in the town I live in and I dont think that even one of them has a yellow car.

They aren't. There is a Very large Taxi company know as Yellow Cab. They use yellow vehicles. If you are in an area serviced by them, it will look like all taxis are yellow. Edit. From Wikipedia.. The color (and name) yellow was selected by John Hertz as the result of a survey by the University of Chicago which indicated it was the easiest color to spot.

We have orange cabs as well as yellow in Seattle.

We have many yellow taxis but the majority are just regular cars and vans....here in Annapolis,Maryland.

Majority of them ARE yellow in NY! I would assume it's because yellow cars stick out (even when drunk) from the rest so you're not randomly helping yourself into the backseat of someone's car...*shrugs*

here in Tennessee there are green, yellow as well as brown taxi cabs. Hollywood uses mainly yellow because many years ago this was how you could tell a taxi was coming. Just because you see things in American films does not mean this how it always is here in America.
