I would think that avoiding the burning throat sensation you get when drinking spirits straight would be it. There is nothing in absinthe (despite common mythology) that will make you crazy or hurt you - other than the alcohol. Some people like their spirits straight, some don't. Depends on what your tastes are and what you can handle.
