  • I live in America and I hate pretzels! But I know what you mean by Americans liking pretzels. There's even snacks where pretzels are covered in chocolate, or Take 5 candy bars which have pretzels in them. I'm assuming Americans like pretzels because they're salty and have a crunchy texture. They're also a "healthy" alternative to more tasty foods like potato chips, so people can munch on them and not feel guilty.
  • I never really hear about Americans liking pretzels all that much... but I live in America, so I never listen for it or try to take notice of what we are all eating, either. I would imagine that oregon's answer would be why we like them. Its weird because usually when thinking what Americans eat, I think of us all eating a McDonald's hamburger with a coke or something... I thought everyone had that idea of us lol. I associate pretzels with German people :P
  • Pretzels are great with icecream, beer and even as breading for panfried foods. Except for the salt they're not really bad for you like chips and other snack foods. I dig them, don't buy them though. They're a very common free snack at pubs here in the north east.
  • Well, like another answer I am an American and I hate Pretzels...this question is a great example of a stupid stereo type...however, I am also an Italian Citizen(not italian though) and I love pizza..kinda of funny I guess....anyways I only know one person who actually enjoys pretzels...
  • I live in Southern California and My son works at Auntie Anns which is a pretzel company in the mall, he says they sell alot of pretzels to shoppers, and that they have like, 10 different kinds of pretzels... These are the big soft pretzels... dipped in butter and whatever topping you want... I think they are easy to fix, sell and easy for the customer to carry and eat. Thats why they are popular... But to tell you the truth.. I haven't heard of anyone I know that would go out of their way to get one.
  • New York City is famous for our street corner pretzel vendors. I would say it comes down to the type of pretzels. There is too wide of a variety and those on here who say they dislike them have possibly only had one or two types. There is also soft and hard pretzels, pretzel rods, sticks, regular, salted and unsalted, many differnet flavors. The list goes on and on. The point is you may try one type and hate it then try another and be in love with it. And to smash a stereotype they aren't dipped in butter unless you want one with butter. Most vendors use a brush and water to have the salt stick to the pretzel. I suggest a hot soft pretzel with either mustard or cheese. They are also great with onion dip.
  • Because they are terrible for us, full of salt and carbs, we love junk food.
  • I just spent an hour picking pretzels out of the snack mix i bought....soft pretzels are tolerable as a warm-bread excuse, however in any other situation it seems to be something very much like the Egyptians putting sand into bread instead of flour. another american in GA to vouch that pretzels are a complete waste of labor and time. if it makes any more impact- im a chef too....i had not though so, just felt like throwing that out there.
  • Tastes great with beer. Low fat snack.
  • I am American, and I only like soft pretzels, and even then, they aren't my favorite. As for the hard, cold kind, I HATE those and so does my son. I don't think my husband is really fond of them.
  • Because they are good. :)
  • I like them, but I wouldn't really miss them if I never had one again.
  • A pretzel is a bread pastry of Medieval European, probably Italian and German origin, that has the shape of a three looped knot or twisted braid. Pretzels are either soft or hard. (source: Wikipedia) I know a lot of people, seriously. Pretty much, none of them like pretzels... most of the Americans I know will actually waste the time it takes to pick EVERY pretzel out of a bag of snack mix and throw them away. Either that, or they just won't buy snack mixes because they have pretzels in them. What a ridiculous stereotype... lol
  • In the United States, Germans are the largest single ethnic group. Their ancesters brought these salty treats to America..........
  • Wow, old thread, but I'm an American, and I was Googling this to find out WHO in the hell likes these things. I'm 27 and currently living in Philadelphia. Philly is the SOFT pretzel capital of the US, and as such, they are pretty popular. As for HARD pretzels, I have no idea who likes them or why they would. They've ruined many a bag of snack mix for me.
