    I beleive those are slots for addon hardware that they never really used. I guess they realized they needed a much better system to compete with the 360 and PS3.

    The slots on the bottom are for hardware upgrade but i dont believe the hardware was ever released as ninendo knew they had better things to worry about. you can attach the hookups on the bottom to gameboy player, it lets you play gameboy color and advanced games on your game cube.
