Yes, while many muslims today simply don't bother, they are supposed to sacrifice an animal (such as a cow or goat) on Eid.

Well, in Islam, there are occasions were muslims are encouraged to "behead" an animal and give it's meet to charity, family and friends. It's not just-to-kill tradition. These occasions includes the islamic holidays, the birth of a child and the just-charity dos. It's not a must-do thing and this is why a lot of people simply don't do it because they can't afford to buy the animal. The animals include camels, cows, sheeps and some other mammals. The only difference between Islamic and non-Islamic way to kill the animal is the killing method. In Islam, the animal is slaughtered by cutting the head starting with the throat area. People can argue about this being merciful or not but it's not what this question is about.

I'm not sure, but I know in the old testement of the Bible, animal sacrifices were required as a means of atonement.
