  • They weren't explicitly taught their own self-worth and how to realize their own beauty, so by default they buy into society's norms. But who can measure up to the plasticized models or scripted celebrities? And if you're not up to that "norm", you're less than, and worried about it. As an added factor re the lack of meaning in our society... I personally think that western consumerist culture is utterly sterile; young people find no fulfillment in it and get jaded. Few people make the effort to spend time in nature away from the mall, to help others, to be still. There are few "rites of passage" like going out with a spear and getting your lion like the Masai.

  • Isn't it just a teenage thing? I stopped doing it around age 25.
  • people just want to be loved and accepted. should you WORRY about other people's opinions? no. for instance, im not sweating what you think of my comment. but i think you should care what effect you have on others. You should examine whether or not you're having a positive or negative effect on someone else through your actions. the world would be a more beautiful, happy place if we all strived to stay on the noble eightfold path laid out by Buddha.
