What are the differences between Blue Cross and Blue Shield?

Two different groups. You have companies that are allowed to provide insurance either one or the other brand. Think of them as franchises of a label. So there are companies that run Blue Cross insurance or Blue Shield insurance plans in different areas (some like the company I work for do both in a couple of states but only one in other states). When I first started here it confused me as well.
