A list of fuels would be a very long one, so I won't attempt that. As for alternate energy sources, I'd say there's one that's not well known, but has a huge potential for energy use, but also with a large drawback - consuming it will generate more CO2. This fuel is called Methane Clathrate (aka Methane Hydrate), which is a frozen form of methane which is available in huge quantities under the ocean floor. You can find more info here about this stuff: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methane_clathrate

Used cooking oil from restaurants and the like can be converted to biodiesel.

Just to put my two cents in, aside from the usual "other" sources, there's a rather useful and abundant source in human body fat. Humans are capable of generating a fair bit of power, when they get going. Riding a bicycle instead of using a car yields the same results (the person gets to work) with very little pollution. Also, it's renewable to an extent. I believe there are gymnasiums now that use the power generated on treadmills and cycles to run the lighting systems. Top idea, if you ask me. Three cheers for fat! Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Compressed air can be used to power vehicles and machinery! Before diesel engines they used compressed air powered train engines in mining operations! Many compressed air powered tools are used today! It's a very safe supply of energy! In the event of any accident if it leaked out it wouldn't hurt anyone or cause any concern of hazmat spills or fire potentialities! It actually produces negative pollution because the air is filtered before it is compressed! So what comes out the tail pipe is cleaner than what went into the tank!It doesn't require any drilling, refineries, tank storage farms, and pipelines. No trains, trucks or ships filled with hazardous substances are present! No massive infrastructure changes are necessary! Just fill your vehicle at any existing commercial or industrial outlet! Every truck stop has commercial compressors present! With solar applications and enough time and sunlight the vehicle could resupply itself if you waited long enough! Why use oil when you can use AIR?
