Yep! Well... I think... I remember going to one in Scotland, where it was just the family. I think it was Lock Ness castle or something... All I remember is that it was right next to Lock Ness. But, mostly, you'll find that castles in Europe are either lived in or a tourist attraction... or yes. Like the Edinburg Castle in Scotland. That's lived in AND a tourist thingy, place(pardon the technical jargon). You'll be hard pressed to find one without anyone else there though...

The problem to visit castles on your own is not the castles, the problem is the transport. Unless you have independent transportation (rent a car) you are obliged to sign up with a tour operator that arranges the transportation and the vist of the castle as an added service.

Yup. I've been to castles where you just pay the fee, a few bob or whatever and you enter and walk about on your own. In France many of the châteaux are wineyards, and you can taste wine or whatever. In Scotland you can just visit and take your time. Here is a nice picture of a castle in Scotland.

Edzell Castle in Edzell Scotland. There's a lot of it in ruins but still worth checking out.
