  • remove the cover an loosen the tenchner an take off the belt,line up the marks on cam an crank an replace belt.
  • Save yourself grief and have it done. Do it wrong and you will trash the engine. And because you lack the experience doing it without experienced watching and advising you. Another consideration, is you cannot really assume that the old timing belt is in the proper position. It could have slipped a notch without checking the cam to crank to piston position you could replace it off and accomplish nothing. Crank the starter anytinme during the process, guaranteed wrong belt placement.
  • Buy a repair manual. It will walk you through it. Please be advised to never turn this engine backwards as it will cause the timing belt to skip teeth and affect valve timing. It is correct that old belt may not be in proper position. Three things on this engine must be in perfect alignment with each other. Camshaft gear, Crankshaft gear, And distributor drive gear. I have replaced and shown people how to replace these and align the timing correctly but the book describes it much better than i can.
