Working in the pet store, I often put canaries in with different breeds of finches and parakeets. There never seemed to be any living condition problems or fights. At home I also had canaries and finches together and didn't have any problems. The only thing, as with any multiple bird cages, is that you have enough room in the cage. An easy way to check this is wingspan. If having two birds in a cage make sure both birds (standing on different perches)have enough room to stretch their wings to either side of the cage. If their wings are longer than the cage width, the cage is too small. The reason for this is to ensure there is room for the birds to hop or flutter to different places in the cage without injury. This also ensures both birds room to get away from each other for their "own space". I hope some of this has helped to give you some ideas. Good luck.
