Would you recommend drugs (legal ones) during childbirth? Are they effective or do they just slow the process?

For the love of God YES - aint NO WAY I could have had my daughter without being pumped full of whatever they gave me during that deal. Some woman wanna go the natural way but forget that! That is pain I never wanna feel again. I had my one and only daughter and got 'fixed' because I know better than to stand in front of that bus again.
