I would find this comment more condescending than I would a compliment, then again it all in a matter of the tone it was given in and who gave it.

I would rather be called "helpful" instead of "useful"... Useful is a tool or a kitchen gadget.

If I did something for them, found some information, baked them a cake, made them a sweater, it might be okay to say those items were useful to them. But I'd rather be called helpful to them in aquiring those items:-)

I think so. It is definatly not a compliment to be called useless!
