If oil companies quit TV advertising, would gas prices come down?

• probably so. it still irks me see the commercials. we know about gasoline, what its for, how to use it and its costs. why do they need commercials?

• The ads aren't saying "Use oil" they are persuading you to shop at a particular gas station. They are very necessary.

• Very necessary for the income of television stations. Very unnecessary for ME. IMHO, I don't think anything revolving around Television Commercials qualifies as Very Necessary. They don't need to say USE OIL because we don't have a choice!

• well sure, you're special, but it is very necessary for a business to advertise itself. It helps drive business and market share their way. There are many choices of gas station when choosing to fill up. For the company, it is very necessary whether you think so or not.
  Macy's advertises, but we all know we need to wear clothes.

• If not being persuaded by television ads makes me special, then yes I am. And if you are persuaded that easily, I know a couple cults (including our Government)that are looking for 'special' people just like you. Gas/Oil have become THE item to shop around. People could care less about the brand as long as they know that down the road someone is selling it for more. As an example, on local AM radio every morning they have a section where the cheapest gas prices are mentioned along with the location then vendor. Now, are those companies paying for the advertising? Not at all! They are only being mentioned BECAUSE of the lower prices they are offering. The brand is third to price and location. Citgo, Shell, Marathon, BP, who cares? Its all the same over priced crap.

• Are you so pissed at the oil companies that you want them to stop advertising? I could argue your points, but you're just upset at the price of gas. Wow.
  It does matter the brand. Citgo is owned by Hugo Chavez and the government of Venezuela - I refuse to purchase from them. BP lies about their greenness - I don't buy there. Marathon shops are locally owned for the most part - I prefer buying there.
  It's not overpriced. Gas prices have not kept up with inflation since about 1985. We now have a large market correction and people just sit back and bitch about it and support the same people that have created the environment for a poor position in the international oil market.

• Yeah, thats all I'm upset about, just the price. Not the fact that we have no readily available alternative fuel, not the hope of one in sight. The fact that lobbyists are making politicians more rich by keeping us strung out on petroleum. The fact that we are ruining the earth not only in our quest for oil but in our excessive use of it as well. The fact that ALL of those aforementioned companies LIE about how GREEN they are. It is a quagmire and it goes on and on. I could easily topple the character limit expressing frustration with petro so before you begin pigeon-holing me as an angry american who does nothing but bitch about money, realize that I have made efforts to be less dependent on oil. In your support of these Corporations, you sound content sucking the world dry and leaving it a worse place than when you entered it. This emphatically ties in to your "I am not even thoughtful to the people I know." quote from another post on here.
