  • I play the accordion as an accompaniment instrument, for everything from Gospel to Folk to Western music. If played quietly and carefully, it can add a lot to a song. It also can be a very emotional instrument, because you can give 'tremolo' to a note (by oscillating the bellows pressure), and fade in from very little volume, to very high volume, and fading back to nothing (again, by 'swell' or bellows pressure). Listen to some of the accordion fills by Joey Miskulin (for a lot of musicians, including Michael Martin Murphey). And the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band often had accordion in the background; I saw two on a video. Hear it in background for Arlo Guthrie's "City of New Orleans". You can also hear prominent Tex-Mex fills by Flaco Jimenez. Check out You Tube for more obvious pieces.
