Are there any benefits to reading a contemporary book by a living writer as opposed to an old book by a dead one?

I suppose one benefit would be your chances of meeting the author.

Another benefit is the chance they will write more books which you can read if you liked the first one. you might (not always) relate more to the modern writer since you probably have a closer set of shared experiences

There's a much greater likelihood that you'll meet a living author at a booksigning at Borders.
