If you ask someone to "strike you on the right cheek," you will realize that he has not swung an uppercut, haymaker or even thrown a punch at you; he has slapped you with the back of his hand, it's the only way to reach the right cheek. In other words, he has done something to offend and outrage you, not committed assault and battery. To turn the other cheek means you are showing that you are in a superior moral position than he is and he can't drag you down to his level with his insulting behavior. It also does what Martin Luther King said: "Somebody has got to break the chain of hate." I don't often agree with King, but he got that one right.

A slap is not delivered to hurt physically but, rather, to insult. So, what Jesus is saying is that if anyone tries to provoke a fight or an argument, either by literally slapping with an open hand or by stinging with insulting words, it would be wrong to retaliate.
