It usually is due to your toes bumping inside your shoes either due to poor fitting shoes and a combination of having structural problem called hammertoes. As long as you continue to wear these types of shoes, your toe will continue to rub and cause the "dark circles". If you wear proper shoes, the circles will eventually disappear. Sometimes surgery is needed to fix the deformity which definitely will make the circles go away. Wouldn't do it unless it's causing discomfort - I'm not a fan of surgery for cosmesis.

I know what you mean and yes, it is more common in darker skinned women because of the melanin in our skins. That is why scars on dark skin are darker for awhile before finally fading (sometimes for months). It stands to reason that shoes that fit well should clear up the issue of the dark toe circles on the joints of your toes, but depending on your skin type, who knows how long that could take? Because of this issue, I have spent more money on shoes and have made sure that my toes are not rubbed the wrong way. But still, I have a problem and I am going to a podiatrist soon to see what is recommended in my case. Good luck to you!!

It is no more common in African American females than in Caucasian or Asian females. That is an insensitive statement. Bath and Body Works have great products for feet. I use them to maintain my gorgeous toes.
