It is alive. It grows upward as well as downward and outward as well. just like all living things.

The top grows upwards towards the sun, and the roots grow downwards towards water.

because if they grew downward only the Morlocks would be able to see them!

BECAUSE if they grew down they would be roots instead of trees!
