  • I am not positive but most toyota engines are very similar. I would recomend lookig in the back of the engine bu the fire wall above the steering rack. It can be hard to see so try a flashlight. Good Luck

  • Just changed the oil on my 2009 matrix 1.8liter engine. oil filter is not a spin on, it is a cartridge, mounted horizontally, just back and above the oil pan, on the passenger's side below the firewall. There's a plastic cover shaped like the base of a small oil filter that is the housing for the paper element that is the filter. A rubber "O" ring is supplied to seal leaks- it had plenty of white grease from the factory for providing a seal. Regards, Roy
  • Roy...I just bought an 09 Corolla with the 1.8 L 4-Cyl DOHC Dual VVT-I SFI Engine. Was looking for the "traditional" oil filter yesterday for when the change is needed. Couldnt find it. After reading your post I think I may have the cartridge type also. I took a picture of it but can't upload it to this site. Can you email me back at jayherenow@aol.com and I'll send you a pic or check this site: http://hometown.aol.com/jayherenow/myhomepage/index.html THANKS
  • You have to go under the car. The filter is forward of the engine and is a cartridge system and you need a special tool which I am trying to find to remove the access cover for the cartridge.
  • It is located in the same location as the 09 2.4 engine. It is a very small spin-on type seen from under the vehicle. It is tucked up under the Black plastic Intake Runners(on 1.8's) on the passenger side.
  • Re: 2009 Corolla 1.8L 2ZR-FE - Oil Filter Location -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- REPLACEMENT CAUTION: Prolonged and repeated contact with engine oil will cause removal of natural oils from the skin, leading to dryness, irritation and dermatitis. In addition, used engine oil contains potentially harmful contaminants which may cause skin cancer. Precautions should be taken when replacing engine oil to minimize the risk of your skin making contact with used engine oil. Wear protective clothing and gloves. Wash your skin thoroughly with soap and water, or use a waterless hand cleaner to remove any used engine oil. Do not use gasoline, thinners or solvents. For environmental protection, used oil and used oil filters must be disposed of at designated disposal sites. 1. DRAIN ENGINE OIL (a) Remove the oil filler cap. (b) Remove the oil drain plug and drain the oil into a container. (c) Clean and install the oil drain plug with a new gasket. Torque: 37 N·m (377 kgf·cm, 27 ft·lbf) 2. SST: 09228-06501 Set a container below the oil filter cap assembly before loosening the oil filter cap. (b) Remove the oil filter cap assembly. (c) Remove oil filter element and O-ring from the oil filter cap. Be sure to remove the O-ring (for the cap) by hand, without using any tools, to prevent damage to the groove for the O-ring on the cap. 3. INSTALL OIL FILTER CAP ASSEMBLY (a) Clean the oil filter cap threads and O-ring groove. (b) Apply a small amount of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the oil filter cap. (c) Set a new oil filter element in the oil filter cap. (d) Remove any dirt or foreign matter from the installation surface and inside of the engine. (e) Reapply a small amount of engine oil to the O-ring of the oil filter cap assembly. Align the cutout in the oil filter cap threads 90° to the grooves in the oil filter bracket and temporarily tighten the cap. Make sure that the O-ring does not get caught between the parts. (f) Using SST, tighten the oil filter cap assembly. • The oil filter is not a traditional spin-on type filter. It is a replaceable element cartridge type which is located on the right side (passenger side) of the engine. You cannot see the filter from the top of the engine but you can see the supply and return to the filter on the bottom of the engine, just below and behind the crankshaft pulley. From the bottom of the engine, look just behind the oil pan and you will see a cast alloy bracket with a small black plastic cylinder protruding from it. The black cylinder is the filter cap which covers the replaceable cartridge. I used a strap wrench to loosen the cap as it was too tight to turn by hand. There is an anti-rotation device (a tab) on the bracket to keep the cap from vibrating loose. You will need to push the tab out of position for the first few turns to get the cap off. The attachment, which the Toyota service manager at the local dealer provided, shows the bracket, cap and replaceable cartridge. Hope this info helps.

  • thanks alot simon going to go to advance and pick up the wrench. others wated over $20.00 {dealer does not even carry it} was it easy as a spin on and do you have to jack up the car? thanks again

  • Thanks very much to everyone who posted to this topic. I just changed the oil and filter in my wife's '09 Corolla, and it was simple. Yes, you DO have to raise the car, and the $5 Ampro filter wrench did the job nicely. I saw on another forum how one fellow sent this long, emotional letter to Toyota about how he would never buy another Toyota because the new filter setup was making life difficult for do-it-yourselfers. Trust me, replacing the oil filter cartridge is not a complex, hi-tech operation. You can do it in less time than it takes to explain it.
