It would depend on how much space you have. If you only have space for a small aquarium, I would recommend either a betta (on its own!!) or some guppies or neon tetras. These are all fairly easy fish to keep and you will probably be able to breed the guppies. Contrary to popular opinion, tropical fish are no harder to keep than coldwater fish.

If you have enough room for a 3 foot+ aquarium I would recommend the good old goldfish. They are very easy to look after if you provide them with enough space and filtration and will live for 10+ years.

If you mean for an aquarium Gouramis are great or there are many kind to choose from and they get along with most other fish. Also there are many tetras that are good with other fish as well. I have gouramis, tetras and mollys in my tank. The tetra is almost 5 yrs old and he is about 2 inches long the gourami is 3 yrs old and he is almost 3 inches long. There are pink ones that we call kissers fish cause they look as if they are kissing and they will kiss your finger if you put it near the water, they are cool fish

If you are cooking fish, then a good one is cod, its easy thaw roll in a batter, then deep fry or bake.

Well if you want minimal tank clean up, don't for with goldfish of guppies as they are quite dirty. I would recommend getting 3-4 clown loaches because they clean the tank but are very attractive. Platies are very cute little fish that are pretty hardy. Molly are also great. Whatever you decide to get, just make sure you keep the tank at the right levels. I recommend getting a constant ammonia monitor that goes in the tank so you can always know when you need to make an adjustment

    To eat or to own?

To eat. Something hearty and not too oily like a filet of sole or tilapia?

That depends on what you are beginning. If you are a beginner cook, I'd say a mild white fish like haddock or flounder would be a good choice.

I don't recommend bettas for beginners. It is not going to be easy to breed bettas for new beginners. Most of them unaware of. It would be great if you rear live bearers like guppies,Mollies, platy or sword tails. Because most of the livebearer's fry are easy to raise

I started with a goldfish, but don't under estimate them! My sister won it at a fair, so we didn't think it would last long. When we got more fish, they kept dying, but this one stayed alive. turns out it was killing and eating them! That fish lived for seven years! So if you want more than one fish, don't get a goldfish apparently! My friends had these ones that looked like they had things growing out of their heads, they were very good, so I would recommend them!

I have to agree i thought that it would be harder to have tropical fish but i meen so what..u need to have a heater?? IT is easy!

Really i would have to say for a beginner look up the profile of the fish u want and only have PEACEFUL fish....THAT MEENS NO SHARKS OR BARBS ex.... so ya i would have to say keep tp ur tetras they r great starter fish!

I first got into fish when my class in elementary school did an experiment project with feeder fish. we were learning about environments. I would suggest starting out with a couple simple, very cheap feeder fish and see how long you can keep them alive, then go on to the average gold fish, then other more exotic gold fish then tropical.

guppies are the easiest to look after but the disadvantages are that gupppy fry takes ages to get they colour mines took about 4 months+ and then if you are lack out of oxgen or heater then they will die very soon.

neon it is very easy but they all have the same colour and its very very hard to breed them because they lay eggs and eggs are so small that they get sucked by the filter or they eat it up as soon as they hatch.

mollies are very hard to look after because they die when you change the water or if there is any change in the temperature or lack of oxgen

goldfish and barbs are hard to breed sometimes easy as well i would recommend them for beginners and dont forget pleco and loaches are important for the tank to suck all the algae and keep the tank healthy.
