Actually, I think that judging pop stars on the basis of actual talent is a great thing. I think America chose some really rotten idols, but I would take Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood over Britney and the like.

I think, for pop, which is mostly about selling out and making the same old boring sound anyway, it works.
