Sulfur is an essential component of life. So, all living organism contain and use sulfur. When the remains of these organisms become fossil fuels, then the sulfur they contained also becomes part of the fossil fuel. The the fossil fuel is burned, the sulfur burn (combines with oxygen) as well producing SO2.
