What is the procedure in the UK for registering your home 'phone not to receive telesales calls? I remember having to ring a number to request being taken off a list.

You simply contact the Telephone Preference Service. You can find them on the web or at this link http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ Once you've registered your home number with them,it then becomes illegal for any organisation to call you at home - as they fear you reporting them. As a consequence most reputable organisations pay to have their lists screened before they make calls. So the system works.
