Becasue no energy shource has the energy density (energy per unit mass) and portability of oil products. Every other way of storing energy is heavier, more expensive to store, harder to store, and slower to move.
-
Because BIG OIL has been successful in lobbying (this administration in particular) and buying up products which interfere with their ability to control supply and demand and thus create record profits.
-
Because our entire transportation infrastructure is based on oil-based products. The investments that would need to be done to completely switch to an alternative resource are simply enormous. Also, the oil companies lobby very hard to limit the damage legislations and regulations do to their business. It will take a long time before we see all cars driving on alternative and renewable energy.

Because as much as our fellow Americans love to ride their high horses, we love our lofty lifestyles even more. It is an extension of the "not in my backyard" mentality that has crippled our power generation and refining growth capability in the last 30 years. I drive a small Kia wagon that was built on one of the most efficient assembly lines ever made, cost $9k, gets over 30mgh no matter what and has only required 3 oil changes and 4 tires in 80k miles. People snicker at my "silly little car" all the time and often assume that I'm poor or a cheapskate for owning such a vehicle. It is a perfectly adequate vehicle for commuting to work. I bought my wife a Land Rover. Most people understand that just fine.... /shrug O_o

Look at peak oil

Because at this point the energy and materials necessary to build, fuel, and dispose of the internal combustion engine are cheaper than the energy and materials necessary to build, fuel, and dispose of the electric car. Lots of very smart people are trying to change that, but until they do, gas and diesel are the way to go. I personally use only mass transit 10-11 months a year.
