  • Applying music notation to guitars is pretty easy, providing you know your alphabet! Each fret is one semi-tone (I think you call them half-tones in the US) so the E string would go up like this- E, F, F# (Gb), G, G# (Ab), A, A# (Bb), B, C, C# (Db), D, D# (Eb), E and so on. Notice there is no # or b between E and F or B and C. Once you have learnt the different notes on the guitar, you can apply the notation to it. The main difference between music and tab is that it doesn't tell you where to play on the fret board, so the E above middle C could be played at the 12th fret on the bottom E or the 7th fret on the A string. You just have to figure it out from the other notes.
  • Get a book and practice. Thats how to do it properly. Scales are also AWESOME. Play scales and as you go along name the notes you are playing. MEL BAYS GUITAR THEORY books are excellent for learning the absolute basics. Have fun!!
