6 feet. I had to catch a rattlesnake as an initiation, so my husband rigged me up a pole with a loop at the bottom and the end of the rope at the top. I slid the loop around its neck and then pulled the rope tight. I skinned the snake and cooked and ate the meat. My dog ate the skin when it was being stretched and dried on a board. My own fault for leaving it where the dog could get at it. I didn't go catch another snake, though. No, I'm not kidding. My life has been full of adventures!

I was fishing in a creek. I was moving to a different spot along the creek bank which had a fallen tree in the path. I placed my hand on it to climb over and it moved..I discovered that I had placed my hand upon a sunning water moccasin. I never thought I could move as fast as I did getting the heck away from there.

About 6 feet at the Tucson out door zoo. We were walking into the snake cage area when I noticed one outside of the cages. It was a big rattler about 2 inches or more in diameter and was sunning itself in the middle of the path. We didn't get any closer!!!!!!!!!!!!

Snakes are not poisonous they are venomous ....you will only be invenomated if bitten .poisonous can come from plants or some animals like toads and frogs just by touching the animal/plant your skin absorbs it ...snake inject venom like spiders do through fangs ...and yes i get very close to venomous snakes as I am a licensed ,qualified snake catcher and relocator ..in Australia ...i would have to say the closest i have been to being bitten was by a red bellied black snake on a call out it missed my hand by 10 cm...RBB

There was a water moccasin in the Shut-Ins (in the Ozark Mountains)in a pool that I was swimming in. He was probably about 15 or 20 feet away.

About 15 feet from a coral snake in my mothers back yard.

I've been on the moors in England so about 2 miles from an adder probably. Ooh, I was terrified of our useless snakes

I used to catch them down by the Klamath River in Southern Oregon and also in Hell's Canyon in North Eastern Oregon.
