  • Because the automatic transmission's oil pump is powered by the engine while it is running. The automatic also needs fluid cooled which again is pumped to the trans cooler (usually in the radiator) by the engine driven trans oil pump. The only automatic that can be towed for a distance is maybe something with a rear and front oil pump like an old cast iron powerglide (oh '62 chevy). Or, a 4WD with a transfer case that has a neutral position which disengages both front and rear differentials from the rest of the drivetrain.
