  • Usually on the harmonic damper, although it may not have one since the computer controls timing with the crank position sensor.
  • I have a 96 5.7 and the correct way to set the timing is to actually only set the T.D.C (Top Dead Center). I don't know if this engine even has a timing mark like they used to, I haven't looked. The only place I have ever seen a timing mark is on the harmonic balancer under the fan belt pulley. You can rotate the engine by bumping the starter or by putting a wrench on the bolt on the harmonic balancer and turning manual. The proper way to set T.D.C is to connect an electronic scanner to the on-board computer via the under dash plug. Find the option that shows the timing in degrees. The acceptable parameters are +/- 2 degrees of 0. To change the degrees you need to shut off the vehicle and loosen the distributor shaft hold down and then rotate the distributor one way or the other. The easiest way to do that is to purchase the proper tool called a distributor wrench ($4.99). Tighten down the distributor shaft and start the vehicle and check your timing again. Repeat until correct. All this info is found in the Chilton repair book chapter 1 page 29 under 96-98 models. You can purchase this manual at Autozone.
