Good science fiction is like any kind of good fiction: It is about the characters. That said, science fiction can generally be summed up in two words: "What if?" "What if an American town from the year 2000 was transported into 1631 Germany?" That's the premise of Eric Flint's "1632". "What if there were a race of time travelers who were wiped out by one of their own to end a war against the most dangerous species in the known universe, and now that last time traveler wanders in search of adventure and companionship?" You have the basic premise of the current run of "Doctor Who". Just take something familiar and ask yourself "What if?"

Buy magizines such as scientific american or sciam mind. Then, take the ideas and concepts that you discover there and ask "what if" questions, which are possible in your model of the concept. For example. If 11 dimensionsal Mbrane theory is correct, then we are all beings, aware of only 3 dimmensions, being projected in 11 dimensions. THere are asepects of ourselves that we arn't aware of.. ect.
