Why do we need to live or stay with somebody in our lifes? Is it really nessesary?

It seems to me that the more self-reliant, the more technically advanced and the more economically independent we are ...the less we need others. In the U.S. it is my understanding that single people living alone are rivaling non-singles, especially in big cities. They are choosing to be alone rather than be with someone out of loneliness, sexual need, social pressures, financial reasons -- because they can. When they decide to not be alone, they usually have better options & tend not to become dependent on significant others. IMHO.
