It has to be something that impacted a lot of people. A lot of times these are the most boring to read because so many other authors copied (e.g. the scarlet letter). They also tend to tackle big ethical issues (e.g. race= The Color Purple, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn). However, the best ones are the ones that transcend the age they're writing for (e.g. anything Shakespeare wrote).
