Why would you do that, when the new IE7 is exactly the same thing and has been avaliable for download for several months. It works fine with Xp, as far as fine ever gets with Explorer.

    No.
    Two reasons why.

One: the Vista Explorer.exe is hand coded for the Vista operating system. The gap (in code) between XP and Vista is FAR greater then the gap (in code) between 2000 and XP. It is, for all intents and purposes, a new operating system. Not just a big update.

Two: Explorer is more then just Explorer.exe. There are hundreds of .dll files that tell explorer.exe how to do everything from display a picture to how to compress a zip file. Dropping a different explorer.exe into your system folder would be like dropping you into the middle of Nintendo, and all of those angry Asians expecting you to code a game in a language you know nothing about.

interesting idea, but if you want to ditch your XP file manager, I'd go with another program all together. Q-dir was a good suggestion, there's plenty more though. Directory Opus is nice (not free) Norton commander is ok (free) even Konqueror is available for windows. It's probably one of the more powerful ones out there, while still retaining a "good looking" UI. That being said, it might not be totally difficult to install, but there's more to it then clicking "next". It's free, if you don't count time as an expense. Maybe 30 minutes to install, and it's less then stable.

Lots of people mistake a conversation about Explorer.exe to be referring to Internet Explorer, because they only know Windows Explorer.exe as their File Manager. However, do I ever understand your question. I tried in vain to find a way to replace a corrupt Explorer.exe File Manager with a fresh copy without reformatting the hard drive and re-installing Windows Vista. BELIEVE ME you do not want to deliberately put the Vista Explorer.exe on any PC as it is FULL of glitches. Mine is locking up almost every I click on a file in it, to the point it will MAX OUT my CPU usage to 100% and stay there until I reboot. I did however, find an EXCELLENT FREE alternative to the Windows Vista Explorer.exe, and it works equally well on both XP and Vista. It is called Q-Dir and I just finished posting details about where to get it and how to set it up on this thread: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/44469#ans8673295 The beauty of the Q-Dir.exe is you do not need to install it, you just drag it out of the zip file to your desktop and rename it: Q-Dir.exe and it will work without installing it, minimizing it's memory usage.
