Basically, every time you get hit with a projectile or some form of energy weapon your shield is the first line of defense. The bar will decrease after each hit it absorbs (some attacks will soak up your shield faster than others). When it reaches zero, the only thing between you and death is your health bar. Note that the energy sword used by Elites bypasses your shield altogether, and one swipe of that will kill you. One charged shot of a plasma pistol will also drain all your shield energy, but won't decrease your health.

There is a shield bar that you have at the top of the screen. Everytime an enemy blasts you, it depletes until it is out. Underneath your sheild bar are eight little blocks each representing HEALTH. Once your sheild is down, every shot after that takes a point of HEALTH. When sheilds are gone, run to a safe place and let the sheild recharge. Every shot taken during the recharging process takes another point of HEALTH and starts the recharging over. Once there is a resting period with no damage taken, the energy sheild recharges all the way. But all HEALTH taken will remain that way. Possible scenario - 1. Sheild is taken down 2. Run away to let recharge; the recharging starts 3. You are shot twice, taking the HEALTH from 8 to 6 4. The recharging starts over 5. Finishes recharging and 2 points of HEALTH are gone

Generally shields do go down after three shots, but the best thing to do is find a spot to let it recharge in the line of fire. I say this because you can go out and start poping them off. Trust me, take a advice from a 3 year player, iam an expert.

The little bars of health don't go down with each shot when the shield is gone. They go down with a few shots each, but some people don't realize it without actually looking for it. For example, when you have 2 bars of health left, if it is a higher amount, the two bars will be yellow, but if you're close to having only one bar left, it will be red.
