Not much other than they appear to be in a certain fixed pattern when viewed from Earth. Not all "stars" in a constellation are actually stars either. Some are other objects such as galaxies.

Some stars in constellations could be hundreds of thousands of light years apart. As yeroca said above, they are merely "constellations" based on how we perceive them in shapes.
