  • Do not worry just yet! Most puppies master 'poop on the paper' more quickly than 'pee on the paper'. It takes a dog until s/he is six or seven months old to develop full bowel and bladder control. A few pointers: 1. Can you afford to buy puppy pads? These are not only absorbent, but most brands have a scent that makes them attractive to puppies who are looking for 'that special place' to do their business. If you can afford them, use them instead of newspaper. 2. Don't punish your puppy for mistakes. This only makes him anxious about the whole thing, and more likely to pee all over the place out of anxiety. 3. When you see the puppy doing the sniffing routine that means he is looking for a place to pee or poop, immediately take him to the designated area and put him down there, talking to him softly and telling him he is a good dog. This will make him think this area, and using it, pleases you, and he will develop a positive attitude to the 'bathroom'. 4. When he gets it right *while you are watching*, praise him lavishly and give him lots of love and and attention. Most puppies are far more motivated by praise than punishment, and this will further encourage him to repeat his performance. And don't despair. It can be a nerve-wracking experience for both of you, especially if you are losing patience. House training is the most stressful time in your relationship, but, think of it this way -- it takes a dog far less time to learn the routine than it does a human child, and keep smiling!
