Why are dead people buried 6 feet underground? How did they decide upon 6 feet?

Part of the reasoning was to help prevent "scavengers" from digging up bodies; others were to make room for up to 2 people in one spot... Most places don't actually bury them 6 feet under, in fact some are only a couple of feet -- or in the case of California it only HAS to be 18 inches (1 1/2 feet).
