Probably for the same reason some folks from the south would think chow chow or pickled beets and eggs are weird.

I do not understand why your friend should think so. Okra (Hibiscus esculentus) or what is known as "Ladies finger" in South east Asia is a wonderful vegetable. In our Country (India) it is known as "Bhindi" and considered King of Summer vegetables and used extensively in vegetarian cooking recipes . Okra contains high value nutrients like dietary fiber, vitamin A and C, Folic acid, calcium and potassium. Properly seasoned and fried Okra is a tasty food.
