  • I believe "Maternal Unit" is the politically correct term.
  • No I don't think so not in the US or elsewhere. The other terms are used in a caring way, if you talk to your mother it would be quite blunt to say "Mother, would you..." but if you say mom, mommy, momma or other it sound very much more caring. At least that is how I see it.

  • What? It's not that mother is unacceptable...It's just that "momma" or "mommy" are much more endearing. "Mother" sounds so cold and formal to me. I use it when *describing* my mother, but I don't use it when I'm speaking to her. I usually call her "Mom". I have a friend who calls her mom "Mother", though. I don't know what gives you the idea that it's a "dirty word"...lol!
