We have to stop meeting like this. When these phones first came out, they were very low powered and had a repeater tower approximately every 1 square mile. As you moved through town, your signal transferred from tower to tower. These 1 square mile areas were called, you guessed it, "cells". (Worked at Radio Shack in those days!)

Hmm... I'm an American, and I have used both terms, actually. I see "mobile" on business cards and address books quite often, as well.

It's just a different way of saying the same thing. Cell phones are called that because of Darry's answer. Mobiles are called that because they are mobile, they can move around. Simple really! :P:D
