  • In order for a play to be classified as a tragedy by Aristotle's standards, a hero must fall due to his own error. This is called the "tragic flaw" and the hero the "tragic hero." Hamlet's tragic flaw was not acting quickly enough. One example of this is when the ghost of Hamlet's father visits him early on in the play, and tells him the truth of his murder. Hamlet pledges to avenge his father's murder, but he doesn't act quickly enough. There are many other examples throughout the play that demonstrate that being too slow to act was the cause of Hamlet's downfall.
