What state? Were the contractor's workers "employees" or subcontractors?

State is GA and the workers were subcontractors.

I hate to say it but it sounds like you are in real trouble:-( I don't know what to tell you other than try to get to that contractor. That is why it is common practice to not pay the full amount ever until the job is completely done to your satisfaction and for you to check and recheck references and the Better Business Bureau. This happens all the time and is one of the reasons why, for roofing jobs, it's best to hire someone who has his own crew and not subcontractors.

The workers shouldn't be hitting you up for the money they worked for the contractor and it should be him they are chasing. What you need is a lawyer. Consider though that a lawyer might cost more than just paying the workers. If you figure out the comparative costs of doing both you may be able to negotiate an agreement with them for less money. I still don't see you as being responsible. You DO have the reciept and cancelled check right?

CONTACT THEM AND STATE YOU WILL TAKE THEM TO COURT, YOU HAD CONTRACT WITH ROOFER YOU HIRED NOT WITH THEM, THEY NEED TO PUT LIEN AGAINST THE PERSON THAT OWES THEM, AND FUTURE MAKE SURE YOU HIRE INSURED CONTRACTORS, NORMALLY INSURED CONTRACTORS HAVE BONDING AND THAT WOULD HAVE PAID FOR THIS PROBLEM ,ITS A FORM OF INSURANCE FOR JOBS THAT DO NOT GET FINISHED
