  • There's nothing you can use as bribery really apart from food. You could try using live food, he might go for that a bit more. Perhaps mosquito larva (you can grow these yourself, just stick a bucket of water outside, wait for it to stagnate and then bingo, free fish food!) or grindal worms if you can get them. I think a betta would be fairly difficult to train as most of them are not that active but it'll be fun trying! You could try teaching him to swim in little circles, I have seen that done before.
  • We have taught our Betta fish Betty to be petted before feeding. She is quite vicious, but here's how we did it: Over a period of time, we observed that Betty really enjoyed human interaction. She seemed to be observing us as much as we her. Sometimes it appeared she was plotting a way to come out of her fishbowl and kill us. Anyway, my husband was in the habit of stirring the top of the fish bowl a bit before her daily feeding. One day, he decided to try to "pet" Baby. Baby now reluctantly allows him to stroke him/her (who knows?) several times before receiving daily rations. It is clear from Betty's behavior she would very much rather take off his finger than allow herself to be petted, but she has no choice if she wants her breakfast...:-)
