I think so. I think it is the lack of confidence you give people that pushes them to be perfectionist not the drive for competition.

Yes and no ... It most certainly can be either good or bad. In general, and for the most part, it is good and helps everyone involved to strive to keep bettering themselves ... but it can also over stimulate some to attempt what they are just not capable of doing, leading to constant failure.

Competition and testing help you to deal with peer pressure. For children it is better to learn it there than the play ground.

One master I used to train with would always say "tournament is the best teacher." He felt that pushing yourself was important. My personal belief is that losing a competition is the best teacher.

I don't like competing (it is mandatory in my school), but I can say I learned so much about myself from competition that it was definitely worth it.
