It certainly helps to clarify one's point if it was misunderstood, or elaborate on something becoming a debate. There's a lot of good reasons to comment on something, mostly it just means the question or answers sparked some interesting convo.

I frequently write comments, and replies to comments. The longest comment string I was a part of was a New Year's Eve party we had on a question by Capt.Jack Sparrow. It went on for several hundred of comments.
