I see you are in the UK. That's too bad. Employers there want to know a lot about you. But in the USA it's illegal. They can do a criminal background check on you. They can test your urine for drugs (in certain circumstances). But they can't ask personal information, unless you are going to be a member of the military or a spy for the government.

So they may be prepared for your excuses.
