JDM is better if you like power. USDM is better if you have to pass emissions testing.

there are some JDM engines that were never manufactured in US, for example a skyline gt-r R32 RB26DETT engine. It can still be installed in multiple vehicles in United States and Canada ( Nissan 240sx, Nissan 180sx, some custom cars). Certain engines also have different parts such as camshafts, and higher compression pistons, but remember, that JDM engines are being tested on 100 octane, slightly raising the HP of that engine compare to 93 octane, which is not even available on every gas station. http://got-jdm.com/JDM is a great sire to find specs on JDM engines.
