North America, Central America and South America are known geographically as "the Americas". It is a geographic term. The United States of America is a nation. It is a political entity. We are the United States and we are located in an America (North America). Years ago (and maybe still today) there were other political entities called States in other parts of the world. Our name identifies our national make-up and our location.
