Baseball bats have a center of percussion called the "sweet spot." Hitting the sweet spot of the bat produces very little vibration in the bat itself. The farther away from this center that you hit the bat, the more the bat vibrates. The less vibration of the bat, the more energy is transferred to the ball.
Wooden and aluminum bats have different sweet spots. The difference is not location on the bat itself but rather their size. The sweet spot on an aluminum bat is big, almost the entire barrell, from one end of the label to the other, length wise. A wood bat is much shorter. If you see a wood bat that has writting or a label on the barrell that is where the sweet spot is, 3-4". Wood bats are great for working on your swing if you swing aluminum, for the simple fact that when you hit with wood your margin for error is smaller thus focusing your concentration on hitting the ball with the sweet spot. Also a wood bat will weigh more and make an aluminum bat feel lighter and faster.
